OVERVIEW AND EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
The information technology (IT) enterprise is rapidly evolving to meet the demands of a changing healthcare environment. Population health management, artificial intelligence/machine learning, and clinical decision support are just a few of the factors driving the need for integrated information systems. Radiology is challenged to become an integral part of the healthcare IT enterprise.

This lecture will discuss how radiology information systems (RIS) and picture archive and communication systems (PACS) are evolving from radiology departmental systems to an integral part of a healthcare IT strategy.

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
  • Discuss the evolution of PACS and RIS in the Radiology Department
  • Describe the changes in RIS/PACS in relation to the information technology (IT) enterprise
  • Explain how imaging systems are becoming an integral part of an IT strategy
