Prostate MRI Case Review
A Radiological and Surgical Perspective

Recording of a live webinar presented on June 26, 2012

A certified prerecorded one-hour webinar on prostate MRI indications and acquisition techniques for surgical planning for radiologists and urologists.

Click the ENROLL NOW icon to the left to register.

Course Overview

This program will provide learners with a variety of prostate MRI cases.  Expert faculty will share their experience and approach to prostate MRI in their practice.

Educational Objectives for the Series
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Define the role of MRI for prostate cancer detection, staging and surveillance
  • Describe the role of prostate MRI in presurgical planning
  • Apply protocol and acquisition techniques to acquire diagnostic MR images that assist urologists in treating men with prostate disease.

Accreditation & Credit

Faculty Biography

Daniel J.A. Margolis, MD
Assistant Professor of Radiology
Co-Director, Prostate MR Imaging
David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA

Dr. Margolis earned his medical degree from University of Southern California School of Medicine, followed by an internship in internal medicine at West Los Angeles Veterans Administration Hospital. He completed his residency in Diagnostic Radiology at UCLA and a prestigious fellowship funded by the National Cancer Institute at Stanford University.

Dr. Margolis' clinical expertise is in prostate magnetic resonance imaging, colon cancer screening, and using non-invasive medical imaging as a "surrogate biomarker" for drug development. Working closely with his colleagues in Interventional Radiology at UCLA, Dr. Margolis provides a liaison between clinical researchers and medical imaging, and provides his expertise in advanced cancer imaging to research new imaging techniques as potential surrogate biomarkers to determine which new drug therapies are effective weeks or months before their effect is clinically evident. This will allow cancer specialists to determine if their therapy is working, or if another therapy is needed, after only one or two doses. Eventually, these techniques may be able to determine which therapy is optimal for tumors otherwise similar in size and appearance on CT even before the first dose is given.

Robert Reiter, MD, MBA
Professor of Urology
Co-Director, JCC Genitourinary Oncology Program Area
David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA

Dr. Reiter earned his medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine, followed by an internship in internal medicine at Stanford University Medical Center. He completed his residency in urology at Baylor College of Medicine and a fellowship in urologic oncology at the National Cancer Institute.

Dr. Reiter’s surgical practice and clinical trials focus on urologic malignancies, and he has been a major practitioner of performing robotic prostatectomies, having completed more than 1,000 cases since 2004. His interest and track record in utilizing multiparametric MRI in prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment is evident in clinical decision making in both active surveillance and robotic surgical planning. Dr. Reiter's laboratory interest is in the basic molecular biology of urologic cancers, and the translation of these discoveries to the clinical care of patients. An example is Dr. Reiter's work related to his description of prostate stem cell antigen (PSCA) while a trainee of Owen Witte, MD. PSCA is overexpressed in a large percentage of prostate and bladder cancers, and a target of monoclonal antibodies against PSCA developed by Dr. Reiter. In work with Anna Wu, PhD, prostate tumors have been non-invasively visualized using radiolabeled PSCA-specific antibody fragments.
