Course Overview
This educational program will provide an overview of the clinical indications for performing stereotactic biopsy and clip/nonwire localization placement. Review will include selection of appropriate biopsy device as well as clip or nonwire localization device selection. The method of biopsy procedure with upright and prone stereotactic equipment and 3D biopsy with lateral arm, pitfalls, and patient management will be discussed.

Educational Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Identify clinical indications for performing stereotactic breast biopsy
  • Discuss the challenges, pitfalls, and advantages of performing stereotactic and/or 3D biopsy with upright or prone equipment
  • Ensure pre-procedure review to select appropriate biopsy technique and patient triage
  • Develop pre-procedure algorithm when multiple breast biopsies are needed
  • Appropriately manage risk to the patient before, during, and after the procedure

Mary K. Hayes, MD

Dr. Mary K. Hayes is a board certified radiologist specializing in Women’s Imaging. She earned her medical degree from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and completed her training in Los Angeles, with a residency at Cedars Sinai Medical Center and fellowship training at the UCLA Iris Cantor Center for Breast Imaging. In 1992, she joined Memorial Healthcare System, Hollywood, FL, and served as Chief of Women’s Imaging Centers for over 20 years. These four centers are ACR-BICOE and NAPBC accredited and staffed by 10 dedicated breast radiologists who work closely with a multidisciplinary team to treat over 700 new breast cancer patients each year.

Dr. Hayes has served on national panels including the ACR Committee on Practice Parameters and Appropriateness Criteria – Breast Imaging, NCoBC National Quality Measurements Committee, and with collaborative teams across the US on tomosynthesis research. She has been an invited speaker at the bipartisan Congressional Women’s Healthcare Summit in Washington, DC. In addition to a busy community-based breast imaging practice, for which she received the Spirit of Healing award, Dr. Hayes has been an early adopter of innovative imaging and intervention technology and trained radiologists on four continents on Breast Imaging and Intervention. Her current research includes expanded application of wire-free localizations in the breast and axilla.
