Basic EKG Interpretation for the Novice
A one and a half-hour lecture for radiologic technologists.
EKG patterns can be very intimidating for those unfamiliar with the electrical tracings of the heart. This lecture will take the learner through a brief history of EKG development, followed by a discussion of cardiac function, anatomy, and blood flow. Participants will learn about standard lead placement and how the electrical activity of the heart translates to EKG tracings. Mr. Fraley will introduce a systematic approach for interpreting EKG patterns and test participants on basic EKG interpretation. Emphasis is placed on identifying normal, abnormal, and lethal EKG patterns.

FACULTY BIOGRAPHY
After his return from Viet Nam, Ron Fraley started his nursing career at Sewickley Valley Hospital School of Nursing. With the aid of a scholarship from the U.S. Navy, Mr Fraley went on to attended Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. While in school he worked part time at Mercy Hospital where he spent the majority of his time in Orthopedics and the Burn Unit. Upon graduation from Duquesne Mr. Fraley was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy, and was stationed at numerous naval hospitals, and Medical Battalions attached to the U.S. Marine Corps. During Mr. Fraley’s nursing career he spent the majority of his time in critical care, emergency care, and research oncology. He spent time at the bedside but also took on many teaching rolls, some to his fellow nurses and to Navy Corpsmen. Before retiring in 2000, Mr. Fraley attained the rank of Commander.
Mr. Fraley has held International and National Faculty positions for the Emergency Nurses Association and the American Burn Association. Currently he is the Education Division’s Operations Manager for the Radiology Department at Indiana University School of Medicine.
