Course Overview
Now that digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) has become a well-established breast imaging modality, referring physicians and radiologists are confronted with selecting the appropriate imaging choice from an even wider array of screening and diagnostic tools.

Sarah M. Friedewald, MD, Section Chief and Co-Medical Director of Caldwell Breast Center at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital and Sharon B. Mass, MD, FACOG, an obstetrician/gynecologist at Morristown Obstetrics and Gynecological Associations, will discuss recent research on the value of DBT as a screening tool, discuss current controversies in screening, eg, over-diagnosis and survival benefits; and the impact of breast density legislation on breast screening practices.

Educational Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

• Evaluate the potential role of digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) for enhancing the screening and diagnosis of breast disease
• Identify the types of patients who may benefit from screening DBT
• Evaluate current controversies in breast cancer screening
• Discuss the impact of breast density legislation on breast screening practices

Faculty Biography

Sarah M. Friedewald, MD
Sarah “Sally” M. Friedewald, MD, is the Section Chief of Breast Imaging and Co-Medical Director of the Caldwell Breast Center at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, IL, near Chicago.

Dr. Friedewald received her medical degree from Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. After a surgical internship, she attended the Diagnostic Radiology residency program at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Her fellowship in women’s imaging was completed at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Most recently, Dr. Friedewald served as lead author of research published in June 2014 in the the Journal of the American Medical Association titled: “Breast Cancer Screening Using Tomosynthesis in Combination with Digital Mammography.” Dr. Friedewald participates in breast imaging multicenter trials, teaches residents and medical students, and is involved in hospital administration. Additionally, she is a Clinical Image Reviewer for the Breast Ultrasound Accreditation Program for the American College of Radiology.

Sharon B. Mass, MD, FACOG
Dr. Mass is an obstetrician/gynecologist who practices at Morristown Obstetrics and Gynecological Associates in Morristown, NJ. Dr. Mass received her undergraduate degree from Cornell University, her medical degree from Jefferson Medical College and she completed her residency in Ob/Gyn at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia.

Dr. Mass has held leadership positions in the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) for the past 18 years. Currently, Dr. Mass serves as Chair of the New Jersey Section of ACOG and also chairs the NJ State Women's Health Coalition. She is the ACOG representative to the United States Breastfeeding Committee.

Dr. Mass enjoys taking care of women of all ages, from adolescence through menopause, and managing both high- and low-risk pregnancies. She has been named as a “Top Doctor” in New Jersey Monthly magazine.
