Course Overview
Stereotactic breast biopsy is routinely used for mammography-detected breast lesions requiring tissue diagnosis. Accuracy of percutaneous image-guided breast biopsy has been improved through the use of stereotactic guidance for non-palpable masses, obviating the need for a surgical procedure and causing less discomfort and minimal risk to the patient and cost savings to the healthcare practice.

This webinar provides an overview of the clinical indications for performing stereotactic breast biopsy, as well as pitfalls, patient management, and selection of appropriate device.

Educational Objectives
After participating in this educational activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Identify clinical indications for stereotactic breast biopsy

  • Discuss the challenges and pitfalls of performing stereotactic breast biopsy

  • Select the appropriate biopsy technique and device

  • Describe how to manage risk to the patient before, during, and after the procedure

Faculty Biography
Mary K. Hayes, M.D.
Dr. Mary K. Hayes is a board certified radiologist specializing in Women’s Imaging. She earned her medical degree from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and completed her training in Los Angeles, with a residency at Cedars Sinai Medical Center and fellowship training at the UCLA Iris Cantor Center for Breast Imaging. In 1992, she joined Memorial Healthcare System, Hollywood, FL and has continued to serve as Chief of Women’s Imaging Centers. The four centers at MHS are ACR-BICOE and NAPBC accredited and staffed by ten dedicated breast radiologists who work closely with a multidisciplinary team to treat over 700 new breast cancer patients each year.

Dr. Hayes has served on national panels including the ACR Committee on Practice Parameters and Appropriateness Criteria – Breast Imaging, NAPBC National Quality Measurements Committee, and with collaborative teams across the US on tomosynthesis research. She has been an invited speaker at the bipartisan Congressional Women’s Healthcare Summit in Washington, DC. In addition to a busy community-based breast imaging practice, for which she received the Spirit of Healing award, she has been an early adopter of innovative technology and trained radiologists on four continents on Breast Imaging and Intervention. Memorial Healthcare System is the second site in the US to implement SAVI SCOUT, a surgical guidance system, into clinical practice.
