Course Overview
Breast MRI (BMRI) has long been known for its high sensitivity and specificity for detecting breast cancer, but the full BMRI protocol is time-consuming and expensive, limiting its use to high-risk and second-look imaging. The development of abbreviated BMRI protocols is proving to be as effective as the standard protocol but requires much less scan and interpretation time, potentially making BMRI available to a broader patient population.

This lecture includes a discussion on patient indications, the abbreviated protocols now under development, and tips on how to manage patients and workflow in clinical practice.

Educational Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

• Discuss the published clinical studies reporting the benefits of using an abbreviated breast MRI protocol

• Implement abbreviated MRI protocols to shorten image acquisition and interpretation

• Compare the quality of clinical case images using abbreviated BMRI protocols vs current standard protocols

Faculty
Gillian M. Newstead, MD, FACR

Dr. Newstead received her medical degree from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and completed an internship at The Genesee Hospital in Rochester, New York. Residency was completed in radiology at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester and Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. She is board certified in Radiology by the American College of Radiology.

Dr. Newstead is a member of numerous medical organizations including the American College of Radiology, the Radiological Society of North America, Association for Breast Cancer Control, and the Society for Breast Imaging. She has published more than 50 papers in journals including Radiology, American Journal of Roentgenology, and European Radiology. Dr. Newstead’s awards and honors include election to fellowship status by the American College of Radiology. She was voted as the “Attending of the Year” for excellence in teaching by the residents at the New York University Department of Radiology.

Dr. Newstead’s research interests lie in breast cancer screening and diagnosis and breast MRI. Her work has been supported by grants from the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute.
