Course Overview
In February 2011, the FDA approved digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) for use in breast imaging. The approval of DBT adds to the already wide range of breast screening and diagnostic imaging options available to physicians.

With FDA approval of DBT, the medical community is faced with evaluating DBT in terms of providing improved care for their patient population and the impact of this new technology on their medical practice. This evaluation process involves consideration of the pros and cons of the technology compared to their current practice, operational concerns, and impact on patient care.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

• Evaluate the potential role of DBT for enhancing the screening and diagnosis of breast disease
• Identify the types of patients who may benefit from digital breast tomosynthesis
• Consider the operational and educational issues of integration of DBT into the clinical practice

Dr. Gary Levine received his undergraduate degree from Tufts University and his medical degree from Albany Medical College. After completing his residency in Diagnostic Radiology at the University of California, Irvine and becoming board certified in diagnostic radiology in 1992, Dr. Levine went on to specialized fellowship training in breast imaging in Sweden under renowned mammographer Dr. Laszlo Tabar.

Dr. Levine is the Director of Breast Imaging at Hoag Breast Care Center in Newport Beach, CA and is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Radiology at USC Keck School of Medicine. Presently Dr. Levine serves on the Board of Trustees and is President-Elect of the National Consortium of Breast Centers.  He also serves on the Steering Committee of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Breast Program.

Dr. Levine has lectured nationally and internationally and has authored numerous peer- reviewed journal articles and book chapters and regularly appears in the media as a medical expert in the field of breast cancer. In 2007, he was named one of the top 25 innovators in healthcare by Health IT magazine. Finally, Dr. Levine is a pioneer in the technique of breast tumor cryoablation.

Dr. Kara Carlson received her undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Iowa. She did internal medicine internships at both Good Samaritan Hospital  and Evanston Hospital and a diagnostic radiology residency at Northwestern University. Dr. Carlson completed here mammography/musculoskeletal fellowship at the University of Michigan.

Currently Dr. Carlson serves as medical director of Evergreen Breast Health Center in Kirkland, WA. Her subspecialty is breast imaging.

Dr. Donna Plecha received her medical degree from Case Western Reserve University. She completed her residency in radiology and is the Director of Breast Imaging at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Currently she is Director of Breast Imaging at Breen Breast Health Pavilion at Case Hospital.  

Dr. Plecha is a member of the Society of Breast Imaging, American College of Radiology, Radiological Society of North America, and the American Roentgen Ray Society. She is a co-author of several articles and book chapters and has served a principle investigator in two clinical trials on digital breast tomosynthesis and on elastography.

Dr. Plecha’s special interest is in diagnostic radiology.
